A balanced meal is not a rulebook. It is a useful starting point: choose a few foods you enjoy, make sure the meal has enough staying power for your day, and adjust as you learn what works for you.

Start with the flexible plate formula

At a meal, aim to include a protein food, a colorful fruit or vegetable, a carbohydrate food, and a flavor or fat you enjoy. You do not need to measure it perfectly. The goal is to make choosing easier.

Step 1

1. Pick a protein food

Eggs, yogurt, beans, lentils, tofu, chicken, fish, or another option you like.

Step 2

2. Add color

Fresh, frozen, or canned fruit and vegetables all count. Choose what is practical.

Step 3

3. Add a carbohydrate

Rice, potatoes, oats, bread, pasta, tortillas, or another familiar staple.

Step 4

4. Finish with flavor

Olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, cheese, sauce, herbs, or a favorite dressing can make the meal easier to enjoy.

Three low-effort meal ideas

  • Breakfast: yogurt, berries, oats or granola, and seeds. Try our 5-minute lime berry yogurt bowl when you want a clear starting point.
  • Lunch: a grain or tortilla, beans or chicken, bagged greens, and salsa or dressing.
  • Dinner: frozen vegetables, a microwaveable grain or potato, and tofu, eggs, fish, or another protein food.

A beginner grocery list

Keep it short

Protein foods

eggs, yogurt, canned beans, tofu, cooked chicken

Produce

berries, bananas, bagged greens, frozen vegetables

Staples

oats, bread, rice, tortillas, potatoes

Flavor

salsa, olive oil, cheese, nuts, seeds, spice blend

Make the plan fit your day

Short on time? Repeat a breakfast you enjoy, use convenience foods, and make enough for one leftover meal. Eating away from home? Use the same formula loosely: look for a protein food, a produce option if available, and a carbohydrate you will actually eat. The plan only works if it works on a busy Tuesday.
